Artist Statement

Growing up with “Little” as a last name, you learn to develop a sense of humour very quickly.

Puns, clever word play, and the elusive nature of language inform the compositions showcased on this website.

Much of the work on this site reflect an appreciation of the Dutch Still Life painters of the 15th-16th century. This still life painting tradition was important to developing deeper narratives around common everyday objects. These painted Vanitas (so called vanities of life) are small moral plays designed to prompt the viewer to consider the brevity of life.

Taking the sensibility of the Vanitas, the work on this site examines our relationship with the common object. The little things that fall between cushions and roll under the couch. A shell, an earring and missing game pieces, all have a meaning that we attach to them and consider unique.

Taking something familiar and changing the scale of the object, challenges the viewers sense of perception.

These works present dream-like visions, both sublime and unsettling.
